There are two ways to run a solar system in a sunny country

1 Electrical distributions board geyser switch off.You are then totally off the grid and we suggest after a day or two of overcast conditions to turn on theDB switch.Remember all hot water in the system that is drawn out is replaced with cold water. 

2 With the distribution db switch on -the 220 v controller or 12 v battery backed up ,charge controlled controller will switch the element on if the system drops below a certain temperature.

These PV panel controller systems does not have to have battery back up but works more effectively if it has a battery charged by the pv panel so the controller is able to control the system in darker conditions.

3 You can use a 10W pv panel but a 30 W pv panel is better for verticle geyser installations or using an ASi panel which works better in dull light

4 Being totally off the grid is the aim ,even the controlling of the controller via pv panel but in very overcast rainy areas it maybe better to have the controller controlled by 220v controller linked direct to power supply .  

5 It is also interesting to remember you can have 220v supply as back up to the element  -possibly even a different controller just for the element and another for the pv panel /battery backup controller.

6 Controllers should have a holiday function so as to control the amazing amount of hot water these systems generate when away and not being flushed with cold water.

7 There is another way to charge a 12v controller  - email us and we will tell you a trick of the trade  .

8 Vertical geysers manage the heat distribution better especially in winter.

9 Showering not only uses alot less water but alot less hot water than a bath!!

10 If the controller is not turning on the element then increase the time duration it is set for and the max temp needed or use manual setting to  heat up water.

11 Thermosyphon evacuated tube systems may over heat and may not be best in unused b&b facilities or where people go away alot  - rather go pumped holiday functions contolled systems.   

These systems like a motor car perform better if taken care of and if you understand how they work and work even more effciently if you tweak the controller settings in overcast conditions.

The most important factor of all is the initial setup and wiring of the controller. 

 

IF SYSTEMS GET TOO HOT IN SUMMER YOU CAN REMOVE A TUBE OR FEW OR HAVE A HEAT DISSAPATOR INSTALLED

IF VERY CLOUDY AND RAINY IT IS GOOD TO HAVE A DIRECT BYPASS CIRCUIT TO YOUR GEYSER ON PV PANEL SYSTEM OR SEPERATE CONTROLLER FOR THE ELEMENT

IF WATER IS TOO HOT A MIXER CAN BE INSTALLED

5 SWITCH OFF LIGHTS NOT BEING USED

7 BUY AN ENERGY METER TO MAKE YOURSELF AWARE OF ENERGY USAGE IN YOUR HOUSE

8 SUBMIT YOUR METER READING MNTHLY SO YOU ARE CHARGED FOR ACTUAL USAGE RATHER THAN ESTIMATED CONSUMPTION .
